Consider becoming an ACSP Student Governing Board Representative!

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) has two students from member institutions in the position of student representative on the ACSP Governing Board. Each of these students serves alternating two year-terms. Being a student representative is a great way to represent your fellow students while learning about the world of planning academicians.

Anaid Yerena, currently an assistant professor at the University of Washington Tacoma, was a PhD student at UC Irvine in her 3rd-4th year when she was an ACSP Student Rep. She defended her dissertation proposal shortly after beginning as a rep.

In her term as Rep, she met and began to work with Young Academics from AESOP; started using Google docs to develop and maintain the institutional history of the role to hopefully make it easier for future PhD reps to find documents; sparked a conversation among board members and Bowling League list serve subscribers about who the list serve served and why.

When asked why being a student rep was a good experience, she responded, “I met and interacted with many of the faculty on the board, it lifted barriers I perceived (before being a student a student rep) to approaching faculty members in general. I learned how decisions were made during meetings, how each member contributed something both from their research and their professional experience. Being a student rep was an honor that instilled in me the desire to contribute my service to the association beyond my two-year term. Currently I am on the ACSP PhD Committee and to look forward to more opportunities to contribute in the future. I was able to get to know my co-reps and we were a support network for each other throughout our terms and beyond. Having a vote was an empowering and rewarding experience and contributed to my understanding of the responsibility that comes with the position.”

The role of the Student Representative is to ensure that the concerns of students are reflected in the discussions and decisions of the ACSP Governing Board. In order to be eligible, students must be enrolled in an ACSP member planning doctoral program for the entire length of their term. A committee composed of the ACSP President and the current student representatives selects the candidate(s) and the President appoints the new student representative.
